About Amulet Series

Kazu Kibuishi’s Amulet series is a fantasy graphic novel saga known for its cinematic storytelling, richly imagined world, and striking artwork. First published in 2008, the series follows siblings Emily Hayes and Navin Hayes as they are drawn into a dangerous alternate world after discovering a mysterious amulet that grants extraordinary powers. Combining elements of adventure, science fiction, and coming-of-age storytelling, Amulet has become one of the most widely recognized middle-grade graphic novel series of the 21st century.

The story begins shortly after the death of Emily and Navin’s father in a tragic accident. Their mother, Karen Hayes, moves the family to an old house inherited from a great-grandfather in hopes of starting over. While exploring the house, Emily and Navin discover a hidden basement that leads to another world known as Alledia. Their arrival coincides with a terrifying event—Karen is attacked and captured by a monstrous creature, forcing the siblings to pursue her into a realm filled with robots, strange cities, magical creatures, and a long-running war.

At the center of the story is the amulet Emily discovers early in the first book. The artifact belonged to a powerful figure known as a Stonekeeper, individuals capable of channeling immense energy through the stone. When Emily becomes the new Stonekeeper, she gains abilities that help her survive in Alledia, but the power comes with dangerous consequences. The amulet has its own voice and influence, and part of Emily’s journey involves learning how to control its power without losing herself to it.

The series opens with Amulet: The Stonekeeper (2008). This first volume introduces the siblings’ transition from ordinary life to an extraordinary adventure. As Emily begins to understand her role as a Stonekeeper, the children encounter allies such as Miskit, a small robot who once served their great-grandfather, and Silas, a rabbit-like warrior who helps guide them through Alledia.

The story expands in The Stonekeeper’s Curse (2009), where Emily and Navin travel to the city of Kanalis seeking help from a resistance movement opposing the forces of the Elf King, the primary antagonist of the series. The second book deepens the world-building, introducing larger political conflicts and hinting at the responsibilities that come with Emily’s powers.

In The Cloud Searchers (2010) and The Last Council (2011), the scope of the series grows dramatically. Emily and Navin join a group of rebels determined to challenge the Elf King’s control over Alledia. These volumes introduce airships, new cities, and complex alliances, turning the story into a broader war narrative while continuing to focus on the siblings’ personal growth.

The middle volumes—Prince of the Elves (2012) and Escape from Lucien (2014)—reveal more about the origins of the Elf King and the history of the Stonekeepers. Emily begins to understand that the amulet’s power has shaped the fate of entire civilizations. As the conflict intensifies, she must decide how to use her abilities responsibly while protecting the people she cares about.

Later entries such as Firelight (2016) and Supernova (2018) move the story closer to its climax. Emily faces increasingly difficult choices as the war against the Elf King reaches a critical stage. Meanwhile, Navin’s role becomes more important as he steps into leadership responsibilities within the resistance.

Kibuishi’s artwork plays a crucial role in the success of the series. The books combine expressive character designs with detailed landscapes and large-scale action sequences. His background in animation and illustration gives the series a visual style that feels cinematic while still retaining the intimacy of a graphic novel.

Reading the Amulet series in publication order allows the world of Alledia to unfold naturally, revealing new locations, histories, and characters with each volume. As Emily grows into her role as a Stonekeeper, the story evolves from a rescue mission into a sweeping fantasy saga about power, responsibility, and the courage required to face a destiny far greater than expected.
