The Long Way Home begins with Gamache in an unfamiliar position for the series: retired, settled in Three Pines, and trying to embrace a quieter life. That calm is interrupted when Clara Morrow asks for help finding her estranged husband, Peter, who was supposed to return home and never did. What follows is less a conventional murder investigation than a search shaped by absence, regret, and the uneasy question of whether someone is lost by accident, by choice, or by something darker. The novel keeps the emotional intimacy of the Three Pines books, but it also widens the canvas, becoming a journey through art, memory, fractured relationships, and the difficult distance between the life people show and the life they are actually living. It feels reflective and quietly suspenseful, with the mystery growing out of longing and damage as much as danger.
