The Levee

Short Stories/Novellas #2
The Levee (2023)

The Levee is a historical novella by William Kent Krueger set during the catastrophic Mississippi flood of 1927. The story follows four men in a small rowboat sent to rescue a family trapped by rising water, but the mission is far from simple. Three of the men are convicts temporarily released from prison for the job, while the fourth leads them with motives that are not entirely clear. As they approach a grand house protected by a private levee, it becomes obvious that not everyone inside is willing to leave.

What follows is a tightly focused story of danger, pressure, and human conflict played out against an overwhelming natural disaster. The setting gives the novella an urgent, claustrophobic atmosphere, even though the landscape itself is vast and unforgiving. Readers can expect a suspenseful, emotionally charged piece of historical fiction that is less about spectacle than about character, survival, pride, and the choices people make when the world around them is starting to give way.
