Stay Hidden begins with what looks like a straightforward case for newly promoted Maine warden investigator Mike Bowditch: a woman has apparently been shot and killed by a deer hunter on a remote island off the coast of Maine. But once Mike arrives on Maquoit Island, the facts refuse to stay simple. Ballistics suggest the hunter may be telling the truth when he says he did not fire the fatal shot, and the island’s guarded, close-knit community seems to be withholding more than it admits. The mystery becomes stranger still when the supposedly dead woman turns up alive.

That premise gives Paul Doiron one of the series’ most overtly puzzle-driven setups. The island setting creates a natural sense of enclosure, while the conflicting evidence pushes the novel toward a more layered identity-and-deception mystery than a routine murder case. Stay Hidden keeps the familiar North Woods atmosphere, but shifts some of the pressure to the coast, where isolation, local secrecy, and divided loyalties create a different kind of danger. The result is a suspense novel built around misdirection, place, and the uneasy feeling that almost everyone Mike meets knows more than they are willing to say.
