Massacre Pond begins with Maine game warden Mike Bowditch being called to the scene of a bizarre and ugly crime: several moose have been found butchered on the estate of Elizabeth Morse, a wealthy animal-rights activist who is buying large stretches of timberland in hopes of creating a new national park. What first looks like a shocking wildlife case soon opens into something more dangerous, with Mike pulled toward murder, local hostility, and a conflict where land, power, and ideology are tightly tangled.

The premise works especially well because Paul Doiron ties the mystery to one of the series’ core strengths: the Maine woods are never just scenery. Here, the wilderness is bound up with politics, conservation battles, class tension, and the fierce emotions surrounding who gets to control the land. Elizabeth Morse’s presence adds another layer of unease, since her mission to preserve the wilderness may also have made her a target.

Massacre Pond keeps Mike in the familiar role of a game warden whose work places him at the edge of crimes much larger than routine law enforcement. The result is a suspense novel that blends environmental conflict, murder investigation, and strong regional atmosphere, with the case unfolding through both physical danger and the volatile human loyalties of the North Woods.
