Lightning Strike

Cork O’Connor #18
Lightning Strike (2021)

Lightning Strike is a prequel to the Cork O’Connor series, set when Cork is nearly thirteen and still living in Aurora, Minnesota. The novel follows a formative summer in 1963, when Cork and a friend discover the body of Big John Manydeeds hanging in the woods. The death is officially treated as a suicide, but Cork cannot let go of the feeling that something is wrong, and his doubts draw him into the same investigation his father, Sheriff Liam O’Connor, is trying to handle.

Rather than working like a standard series entry, this novel steps back to show the forces that helped shape Cork long before he became the man readers know from the later books. It blends mystery with coming-of-age tension, small-town conflict, and the complicated pull of family, community, and identity. Set in the North Country, it has a reflective, atmospheric tone, but the central investigation still carries real urgency. Readers can expect a character-driven crime novel that is quieter in some ways than the later books, yet deeply important to the series as a whole.
