Dexter by Design finds Dexter Morgan in the almost comical position of trying to enjoy married life and keep his darker impulses under control, only for Miami to hand him something too strange to ignore. When a killer begins staging bodies with an artist’s eye for spectacle, the case pulls Dexter back toward the part of himself that never stays quiet for long. The premise has the series’ usual mix of menace and dark humor, but this time with a more stylized, theatrical edge, as violence starts to look less like simple brutality and more like performance.
