Dearly Devoted Dexter

Dearly Devoted Dexter takes the darkly offbeat premise of the first book and pushes Dexter into even more dangerous territory. Dexter Morgan is still trying to keep his carefully controlled double life intact, but that becomes much harder when Sergeant Doakes begins paying far too much attention to him and a new killer starts leaving behind crimes so grotesque that even Dexter is rattled. What gives the novel its hook is that Dexter is no longer the most frightening person in the room, which forces him into a position he does not entirely welcome: hunter, witness, and reluctant protector all at once. The story keeps the series’ mix of macabre humor and moral unease, but this time with a sharper sense of escalation, as Dexter is pulled closer to a case that feels both professionally and personally impossible to ignore.
