Career of Evil gives the Strike series its darkest and most personal turn so far. The case begins when Robin Ellacott receives a horrifying package, immediately making it clear that this is not just another investigation arriving at the office, but a threat aimed directly at the agency and at Strike himself. Because Strike can think of several men from his past who might be capable of something like this, the mystery quickly becomes a hunt through old damage, buried violence, and the parts of his history he would rather keep sealed off. That personal angle gives the novel a much harsher edge than the earlier books. It still works as a detective story, but it is also about fear, trust, and the strain placed on Strike and Robin as their partnership is tested in ways that feel both professional and painfully intimate.
