A Great Reckoning opens with a mystery that feels quieter at first, but no less dangerous. When an old, intricate map is discovered hidden inside the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it seems like an odd curiosity—until it begins pointing toward secrets that refuse to stay buried. At the same time, Gamache has taken on a difficult new role at the Sûreté Academy, where he is trying to confront the damage left by corruption and reshape what kind of officers the force will become. Those two threads give the novel a layered, tense atmosphere: part hidden-past mystery, part institutional reckoning, and very much a story about what it costs to rebuild something that has been badly broken. It has the emotional depth typical of the series, but with an added sense of moral pressure, as private history and public responsibility begin to collide.
