A Better Man opens with Gamache returning to the Sûreté under difficult circumstances, only to be met by a case that feels urgent from the start. A father comes to him desperate for help finding his missing daughter, while rising floodwaters and public pressure create a wider sense of instability around the investigation. That combination gives the novel a tense, unsettled atmosphere: part missing-person case, part moral and institutional strain, with the danger in the story coming from both human behavior and forces that feel increasingly hard to contain. As with the strongest Gamache books, the premise is not just about solving a crime, but about character, judgment, and the weight of trying to do the right thing when everything around you seems to be under stress.
